Homework in First Grade
First grade homework will include practicing our sight words at home, and in a few weeks, reading our leveled “just right” books to an adult at home as often as possible. Our weekly newsletters will include other ways to support our learning at home as well. Worksheets or other written assignments will not be sent home on a regular basis in first grade. Your children work very hard all day and know they need some down time in the evening. We also want to respect your time together as a family at night
Starting in October your child will be coming home with book bags filled with 3-5 books at the students' current "just right" level. You can expect your child to be able to read these books with limited help. Rereading books multiple times helps children with their fluency and sight word recognition. Books will come home at the beginning of the week. Please have your child read you her or his books as many times as possible before returning them to school by Friday. Thank you for your support at home.
Any reading with your child is valuable and beneficial. Read to them, have them read to you, read informational texts that you encounter together on the weekends, and talk about the texts.
If you want more to do at home, please see our Word Work page!
Please also check out the student websites I have shared on our site for more information.
