Volunteering in the Classroom
I sincerely value the partnership with parents and families, and welcome you to participate in your child's first grade experience this year.
Morning Meeting - You're invited to join us! Send me an email or catch me in the halls to set up a day to come in. Everyday works, expect for Wednesday because of P.E. first thing. Morning Meeting is how we start our day together. We welcome each child with a greeting, talk about our day, and practice some basic skills.
Readers' Workshop is every day in the morning, please check our schedule for times. Ideally, I'd love if volunteers could commit to a certain day for a defined stretch of time, for example, you might take Wednesdays, or even share Wednesdays with another parent. We start with a lesson about a specific reading skill, then students read independently while I meet with guided reading groups. I love having volunteers who can help keep our young readers focused on their books during independent time. Our expectation is that students are practicing the day's skill during this time, and perhaps preparing an example to share with the group at the end of Readers' Workshop. We plan to officially start with reading volunteers in mid-October/November. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering during reading time!
Field Trips usually provide an opportunity for parent chaperones. I'll send you information as trips get confirmed. If you know you want to participate in a field trip this year, let us know and we'll keep you on our list!
Work Celebrations - After each trimester you will be invited in to celebrate the hard work we're doing! Students get so excited to show off their work to loved ones in all content areas; reading, writing, science, math, and social studies.
We also love having family members come to share an area of expertise or a piece of your culture with the class. Or if you have a special skill or resource that connects to our curriculum, please feel free to get in touch and plan a special event!
