Word Work
We will be using a phonics-based language program called Fundations. First graders will learn spelling and phonics concepts such as long and short vowel sounds, blends and digraphs, bonus letters, vowel teams, and suffixes. See the Fundations website for more information. I'll be posting our Fundations units and words throughout the year.
We'll also be working on sight words. Sight Words are high-frequency words that students need to be able to recognize, read, and spell. These words often break "spelling rules," and sometimes contain "tricks." (For example, "and" is a trick word because the "an" is a glued sound and we don't hear the regular 'short a' sound at all.) We'll be practicing these at reading time and encourage you to practice at home as well. These words get harder as the weeks progress!

Trimester III: First Grade Sight Word Schedule
